stl file (using the button in the left pane) I also tried to use the new design from file but it still doesn't I just downloaded and installed fusion 360 and Im having trouble trying to import the stl file in. Use it as your design program instead of Inventor with a full or student license, or use it with a student license and just as a convertor for STL files, it's up to you. If you are used to Inventor, Fusion feels very logical and has a quick learning curve. Fusion is an evolution on Inventor, and can import and work with STL files directly. Please take a look at Fusion 360 and the A360 online control panel. You need to download Autodesk Mesh Enabler: The best way I found is to use "Mesh to solid" program, convert the file to 3Dm, and import it to inventor, no hassle, file ready to edit. If its a downloaded STL file i run it thru Netfabb first to make sure its uniform and watertight ThenĮxport to a sat file and import to Inventor.

Ive had some success with 3Dmax > Import STL then once imported in the drop down menu ( standard primitive, extended primitive etc ) select body object which greatly simplifies the mesh.

The convert to brep in Fusion works but only on very low poly / simple meshes Same story with 123D design " convert to solid" On new 2017 version, I see now this is build in, and works better to some extend as in it recognizes the flat surfaces, meaning you can pick up eges etc. I found it so annoying I don t bother changeing models anymore. This tools gives you a model to work with, but it's all triangulated and youĬan t pick up edges etc. Meanwhile, on my old Inventor 2015, I had to download a plug-in called "Mesh Analyzer for inventor".
